Foremost luxury retail store, Adam and Eve is taking the concept of home space further with the staging of ‘The Content’ an exhibition of paintings by renowned Nigerian artists.
The exhibition which will open on Sunday October 15 will feature pieces from Dr Bruce Onobrakpeya, Kolade Oshinowo, Lekan Onabanjo among others.
Modupe Ogunlesi, CEO, Adam and Eve says ‘The Content’ succinctly captures what her brand, Adam and Eve, stands for.
“I think it’s so apt because what Adam and Eve do normally is the content of your space. The functional content of your space. Now, we are adding beauty to your wall – to your space.
It is still the content of your space. That’s why it is ‘The Content’. As my chairman has written, he says: ‘the content plus Adam and Eve is contentments.’”
The exhibition which started last year featured the works of nine artistes including grand masters, like Bruce Onobrakpeya and Kolade Oshinowo, while the other seven included artists from the next generation.
“This time we are inviting the same grand artists back as our guest artists and they are only showing two pieces each. Then Lekan Onabanjo who is also first-generation artist is back again as guest artists. We have again three artists in the first generation and five from the younger generation.
I have seen their works and I am still surprised at their talent. You need to see some of their marvellous pieces that we are showing.
You would wonder that we have got so much talent in this field that limiting it to a gallery is actually doing a disservice to the works.”
In addition to the calibre of artists at the exhibition another reason why you can’t afford to miss ‘The Content’ is to experience how artworks interact with high end homewares and the entire living space.
“It is not everyone who would enter a gallery,” Ogunlesi explains further, “because they don’t think of themselves as collectors but when it’s in Adam and Eve, you are here to just fill up your space with things you like.
You see something else that would also fill up your space and its nice, then you buy it. And I think we need to give such opportunities to our artists.”
Also, a 100-year-old Port that has been in Adam and Eve’s exclusive collection will be on sale that day which cost £2, 500. The Port which is a collectors’ item was acquired by Ogunlesi from the manufacturers a few years ago.
“I’ve got a 100-year old Port which I have in three bottles. There is the 60-year-old and I have 12 bottles, I’ve got the 40-year- old and I have two cases of that which is about 24.
Port is more like your digestive but it is very smooth. It matured in such a way that you could drink half a bottle without even noticing.
But I can assure you that when you drink this half a bottle, you are going to sleep for the next 48-hours. The lovely thing is you will not have a hangover because it is that smooth.”
